Program Overview


VA Special Home Adaptation Grant - Detail Verified 5/16/13 Last Updated 10/23/12 is a benefit program for the veterans and servicemembers who have service-connected disabilities. They may be entitled to a grant subject to program eligibility requirements for the purpose of acquiring a land, constructing an adapted home, or modifying an existing home to meet their mobility needs. The goal of the Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grant program is to provide a barrier-free living environment that affords the veterans or servicemembers a level of independent living he or she may not otherwise enjoy. This grant can be used anywhere in the US, including states, territories and commonwealths, and outside the US.


Who is eligible for this program?


Grant is available to veterans or servicemembers who are entitled to compensation for permanent and total service-connected disability. Must be medically and financially feasible for veteran or service member to modify or acquire the home.

Funds may be used to purchase, build or modify a home to meet veteran's needs.

Anywhere in the US, including states, territories and commonwealths, and outside the US.



Allowable property types: single family, townhomes, condominiums, and Co-Operatives.


Benefit Details


Veterans Administration (VA) provides eligible veterans and service members up to the current maximum allowable grant amount of $12,992 to purchase, build or modify a home. The grant cannot exceed 50% of the cost of a specially adapted home. Maximum assistance amount is $12,992.

Benefit: The grant amount may not exceed 50% of the actual cost of the adapted home. Public law allows up to three usages of grant benefits, yet limited to all three usages equaling to current allowable maximum grant amount up to $12,992 and no more than 50% of the cost of the home.

Other Program Comments:Temporary Residence Assistance (TRA) grant of $5,092 may be used by the veteran or servicemember to adapt a family member's home.
